Chris Hemsworth has only just wrapped production on Avengers 4, but it sounds like he’s far from done with the character. According to an interview with IGN, the Ragnarok star’s MCU contract is now done, but Taika Waititi’s threequel and his work on the Russos’ ensembles has inspired his enthusiasm for the character.
“I’ve just, literally two days ago, finished Avengers 4 and that’s my contract – my preexisting contract is done now, so it’s kind of like, ‘Wow, that’s it.’ Two or three films ago I was like, ‘Okay, a couple more.’ I was enjoying it but I was like… I felt a little restricted. And after this last experience with Taika, and actually these last two Avengers, I feel like we’ve reinvented the character a number of times – even in these next two, he evolves again, and you don’t get that opportunity often in a franchise. So I definitely feel a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm, and more so than ever, I think.”
That’s all particularly interesting – especially the idea of Thor being reinvented again – but it would mean even more if Marvel hand Hemsworth the contract extension he now seems so keen on:
“If I had the opportunity to do it again, I think I’d love to. I also think there’s an appetite for it now, or there’s a far greater range of possibilities of where he can go now, what he can do, just because we’ve kind of broken the mold a bit.”
The shape of the MCU should be almost unrecognisable after Avengers 4, with the X-Men and The Fantastic Four set to debut in some way – as well as Kevin Feige’s assertion that everything (including the format) will be different, but there will undoubtedly still be some continuity. And Ragnarok’s success should mean Thor is one of the characters who is seriously considered for further expansion.
Unless, of course, Hemsworth is throwing a curve-ball here to misdirect from the fact that the God Of Thunder ends up dying in the Infinity Saga…?
