We’re just over four months away from the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and yet you’d be forgiven for forgetting that it was even a thing.
There’s been almost no hype for the movie, a marked change from Lucasfilm’s approach to how they’ve promoted their other films in the Disney era (or, indeed, how pretty much any major blockbuster is marketed). A big part of that is down to The Last Jedi, with the release dates six months apart rather than the typical year, and also big behind the scenes changes. Now, though, the hype machine is ramping up with… a synopsis.
“Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.”
It’s not quite the trailer everyone’s been waiting for, but it does give us confirmation as to what exactly will be in the movie. We will see how Han meets Chewie, and the life debt that comes with it, while his meeting with Lando will presumably include the game of Sabacc and winning the Falcon. The criminal underworld line also fits with rumours of an appearance from Jabba the Hutt.
The movie, which is directed by Ron Howard (after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired), is still scheduled for release on May 25 this year. Hopefully, this synopsis is the sign of the marketing push and a trailer isn’t too far away. Either way, it’s nice to know that Lucasfilm have remembered this movie exists.
