December is always a tricky month where cinema is concerned: though studios do typically release a glut of holiday-friendly blockbusters and prestige pictures, it’s also often a dumping ground for trite, lame holiday films and and lesser tentpoles studios have basically given up on.
This past December, however, was pretty great for the most part. Even the worst films of the month weren’t terrible, and only a handful of December’s cinematic offerings scored Rotten ratings with critics.
Whether you wanted high-octane big-budget brilliance, more grounded indie entertainment, a neat documentary to sink your teeth into, or something for the kids, 2017 closed out in perfectly respectable fashion.
Of course, this is just the calm before the storm, as January will serve up an avalanche of prestige stragglers, such as Molly’s Game, All the Money in the World, Hostiles, Darkest Hour, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, The Post, Downsizing, and the more mainstream likes of Insidious: The Last Key, Coco, The Commuter and Maze Runner: The Death Cure, among others. Box Office: Bright was released direct-to-Netflix, so nothing to see here.
Verdict: Neither as terrible as you might’ve expected nor as good as you perhaps hoped, Netflix’s first certifiable blockbuster film delivers a fun double-act between Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, though it’s unfortunately severely lacking in the action and narrative departments.
Furthermore, most of the supporting cast is thoroughly wasted (especially Noomi Rapace and Edgar Ramirez), and overall it just doesn’t make the most of its loopy premise.
In short, you’ll be glad you didn’t pay extra money to watch it in a cinema, but at the same time, you’ll probably not regret that it exists on such an easily-accessible platform as Netflix.
