star wars last jedi

The internet has been ablaze these past few weeks, with so-called ‘divisive’ reactions to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Despite the adoration and love it has received from critics and the majority of viewers (this writer included), a small but vocal group of fans have not been shy in voicing their disappointment. One of the main complaints these fans seem to have is the way in which the film portrays Luke Skywalker.

Thus, when out-of-context interview footage surfaced of Mark Hamill saying that the character he was playing in Last Jedi was “not my Luke”, the fandom went a little nuts.

But Luke Skywalker himself has taken to Twitter to clarify these comments, and post the rest of said-interview footage to better contextualize his comments;

I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public.Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make good movie. I got more than that- @rianjohnson made an all-time GREAT one! #HumbledHamill

Hamill is a man of honesty and openness, and has been all throughout his career. He enjoys being able to share his thoughts and opinions with the fans, and was simply acknowledging here that his words have been taken out of context. He makes the incredibly valid point, that Rian Johnson’s script pushed him and his idea of Luke as a character, out of his comfort zone, but that it was ultimately for the better.

Hamill has gone on to call Last Jedi an “all-time great” film, and has praised Rian Johnson as one of his “favorite” directors to work with, in other interviews.

Forever a man of class, here’s hoping we get to see much more of Mark Hamill in the not-too-distant future.
