Seven hells. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the creators and showrunners of Game of Thrones (i.e. the biggest TV show in the world) are taking their talents to Star Wars (i.e. the biggest movie franchise in the world).
It’s a hugely unexpected move, and yet one that makes a lot of sense. Lucasfilm are looking to expand the universe beyond the Skywalker saga, and Benioff and Weiss have a proven track record in handling a massive IP and delivering the goods.
What’s interesting about the announcement is that, unlike when Rian Johnson’s brand new trilogy was announced, there’s no emphasis on this being a wholly original film series, meaning the GoT duo could pick at an existing part of Star Wars lore, whether it be canon already or a part of Legends they decide to bring back. And there’s one obvious contender should they choose to adapt something.
Knights of the Old Republic, or even just the Old Republic era, has been crying out for a live-action take – especially as it’s unlikely there’ll be a worthwhile redo of the video games – and it shouldn’t just be a consideration for ‘D&D’, but what they definitely make in a galaxy far, far away; a perfect marriage of story and teller.
